Behind every “safe,” “fair,” or “aligned” AI system is a global underclass of low-paid workers doing the dirty work: labeling hate speech, moderating violent content, and flagging misinformation—often under intense conditions, for pennies per task.

Ethical AI, as it's marketed by big tech, isn't just code. It’s human labor. And it's time we talk about the people who make AI “ethical”—and what it costs them.

  • Labeling facial expressions, tone, emotion, and dialect
  • Ranking which AI outputs are “better” or “more helpful”

These people are the real-time conscience of the AI systems you use.


A Glimpse Into Their Work

A report by Time in 2023 revealed that workers in Nairobi were paid as little as $1.32 an hour to review content for OpenAI’s GPT models. Their job? To label whether text samples contained:

  • Hate speech
  • Racist slurs
  • Violent threats
  • Sexual abuse descriptions

The exposure to graphic content caused real psychological harm. Workers reported trauma, burnout, and long-term emotional distress, often without access to mental health support.

This is the invisible labor baked into the so-called “safety layer” of large language models.

Many believe that once an AI is trained, it runs on autopilot. But the truth is, AI systems require constant human input to stay accurate, relevant, and safe.

We don’t need less human input in AI. We need more accountability, more dignity, and more transparency for the humans already doing the hardest work.

Because the future of ethical AI isn’t just about how a model behaves.

It’s about how we treat the people who taught it to behave in the first place.
