Why Gabby Douglas will be at the NASCAR Cup Series finale
The 2017 NASCAR Cup Series season started with Laurie Hernandez hanging out at the Daytona 500 , and it will end with Gabby Douglas at the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The three-time Olympic gold medalist will be the honorary starter and wave the green flag to kick off the Ford EcoBoost 400 – the last of 10 playoff races that will determine the Cup Series champion on Nov. 19 – the Florida track announced Wednesday. Douglas is an excellent choice for the role, considering past honorary starters this season have been fairly underwhelming, ranging from lesser known actors to local politicians and sponsor CEOs. She will certainly add to the spectacle NASCAR hopes the Cup Series finale will be and has the potential to attract general sports fans – in addition to racing ones – something NASCAR very much needs. “Having Gabby Douglas as our Honorary Starter is extremely exciting and is what Ford Championship Weekend is all about,” Homestead-Miami Speedway President Matthew Becherer said in a release . “She has accumulated countless accolades in her impressive career and is a perfect fit for a championship race. Her superstar-status adds yet another highlight to this year’s pre-race festivities.” More NASCAR!
